Embracing Laughter to Create Success

Do you usually smile or laugh a lot? Do you easily crack into laughter? Do you wonder if you laughed too loudly? Do you wonder what others are thinking of you when you laugh out loud? Do you wonder if it is silly for you to laugh or smile all the time or even think that others might consider you not smart enough for laughing and smiling most of the time? Do you suddenly end the laughter when you find out you are the only one laughing and quickly put on a serious look?

Wonder no more!! Join me in a journey of laughter, self-reflection and the realization that joy, smiles and laughter are God given gifts to be celebrated. In fact, laughter is one of the earliest feedback mechanisms that babies provide and we chuckle and coo when a baby smiles back at us. In a world where many people struggle to crack a smile and default into giving others a blank look; it might be your laughter and smiling face that might be the dose of medicine a heavy-laden heart needs.

Introduction

My name is Grace, unafraid to laugh loudly and smile, both privately and publicly. As a little girl, you could not make me stop laughing. I laughed and giggled with my friends as we played and walked home from school, laughed when reading my class composition short stories in front of the class, i.e. laughed at my own stories, laughed as grandma told the grand kids for the umptieth time, imaginary stories about the "giants" with an eye in their backs that occasionally visited her village when she was young and laughed until I cried when my siblings tickled me.

Fast forward to high school, I remember one instance when a classmate wrote his English short story composition and when he ran out of English words to describe what he wanted to say, he used the native language to complete his sentence and carried on in English in the next sentence. My fruitless attempt to stop laughing led to our study group being dismissed for the afternoon and the teacher agreeing the student should get an A for effort. Please note that no love was lost between me, and my classmate David who scored an A in Math and often reminded us English came by ship to Africa.

In college, my friend KaG often commented that if you wanted to find me, all you had to do was to remain still and listen where laughter was emanating from. With a high level of accuracy, my friend could tell where I was by the regular laughter that revibrated in the dorm corridors. Upon getting married to my adoring husband Gabriel, my best friend Naomi called him and told him, his main job was to make sure I never lose the laughter.... a story for another day.
